R is for RESISTANCE

This post is part of "An A to Z for Success". See the side panel on the right for an index.

The kind RESISTANCE we are talking about here is not what comes up when we need REST and RECUPERATION. That, of course, should be a regular part of any healthy schedule.

What we are talking about is the feeling that keeps kicking up with excuses. RESISTANCE is when we know we could be making progress towards achieving our aims, but we keep putting things off and finding other things to do.

A basic law of everyday physics is that every force exerted meets with an equal and opposite force. So, if we are not feeling resistance to achieving our aims, we can't be even trying.

Feeling resistence is actually a good sign that we are moving in the right direction towards achieving our aims, or at least we are wanting to.

The resistance we feel is well intended. It comes from our auto-pilot safety system, an unconscious tendency to stick within our comfort zone, with what is perceived as familiar and safe.

Notice, I said perceived as familiar and safe. Trouble is, the boundaries of our comfort zone are based on old perceptions. They do not allow for new possibilities. We have to keep pushing out those borders to accommodate our dreams.

This is a good time to revisit what we learned at B is for BELIEFS. There, it explains where most of our feelings of resistance come from and how we can get round them. I won't repeat all that here.

But often when we have thoroughly dealt with all of our "sticky" resistance that has been keeping us stuck in our comfort zone, the resistance we feel seems to get ramped up. We are happy to move forwards, we really want too, but the road ahead just feels too tough. What's going on?

It's a test.

Are you worthy of achieving your aim? Are you ready and willing to pay the price? Have you really got what it takes? This is a sign that what you are trying to achieve is something truly worthwhile, something that will take you to a new level.

It's like when you are trying to prise off a lid that feels like it is welded onto the jar. The point when the resistance feels greatest, that's when it is about to give. It feels impossible at that moment, but it actually only requires a tiny amount more effort.

You can do it.
